Core team

Dorette Besser, Head of the Conflict Sensitivity Facility

As the Head of the CSF, Dorette provides strategic leadership for and manage the operations of the facility. As our main representative, Dorette also represents the facility in engagements with partners and donors while also being involved in our capacity building sessions, our analysis and our engagements with the broader aid sector in Sudan.

Dorette has 14 years of experience working in a range of management, operational and strategic positions for NGOs and businesses in Sudan, South Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Philippines and the Caribbean. Over the years, she has worked tirelessly to build conflict sensitivity within aid programs through advocacy and advisory work to UN agencies and the wider donor community.

Abdelazeem Aldehaib, Capacity Development Advisor

Abdelazeem joined the CSF as the Capacity Development Advisor in June 2021. In this role, he leads on the design and delivery of our trainings on conflict sensitivity and the Sudanese context as well as targeted capacity support to specific partners.

To this role, Abdelazeem brings over 20 years’ of experience in humanitarian, programme development and peacebuilding sectors. He studied Applied Psychology, Economics and Development studies from the Khartoum and Sharq El Nill University. He also holds a MSc. in Peace and Development Studies from Juba University in South Sudan.

Supporting roles

Audrey Bottjen is a Senior Advisor to the CSF. Audrey leads the design process for the CSF, drawing deeply on the three years she was Director of the CSRF, the CSF’s sister facility in South Sudan. Audrey has worked on peace and conflict issues in Sudan and South Sudan since 2010 and elsewhere in Africa and the Middle East since 2003.

Natalia Chan provides strategic and technical support to the CSF in Sudan and works closely with the CSRF in South Sudan. She has worked on Sudan and South Sudan since 2007, and is the co-chair of the South Sudan Working Group of UK-based NGOs. She also provides support to Saferworld’s helpdesks, including for the European Investment Bank and the Austrian Development Agency, and to Saferworld’s country programmes in South Sudan and Sudan.

Alastair Carr is a Programme and Policy Officer at Saferworld’s Conflict Advisory Unit, supporting the development of the CSF website, communications and analysis while also delivering capacity support for CSF partners. Alastair has been working with Saferworld for the last four years, supporting conflict sensitivity helpdesks for Sida and the European Investment Bank following stints with the Somalia programme and the Global Policy and Advocacy Team.
