In Sudan, everyday survival has always depended on interdependence. Communities share land, water, markets, labour and protection through informal agreements and social networks that quietly hold society together. Since the outbreak of war, these same systems have become lifelines, filling gaps left by collapsing state services and overstretched humanitarian response.

This paper explores how local cooperation, mutual aid and community-led problem-solving are shaping resilience and coexistence across conflict-affected regions. It examines where international aid has successfully reinforced these dynamics, and where well-intentioned interventions have unintentionally disrupted them. The analysis offers practical direction for humanitarian and donor actors seeking to support locally led, conflict-sensitive recovery in Sudan.
