This chapter in ‘Humanitarian diplomacy: practitioners and their craft’ elaborates on the concept of humanitarian diplomacy through a deep analysis of the context of humanitarian aid in Sudan in 2002, when the war between the government and SPLM was still active, while Operation Lifeline Sudan still represented the major humanitarian effort in Sudan. In particular, besides recalling crucial events that shaped the delivery of humanitarian aid to Southern Sudan, this chapter delves into the structural and practical issues related to humanitarian access and negotiations.

The CSF, hosted by Saferworld, was established in 2021 to support the aid sector in Sudan to be more conflict sensitive. We provide analysis, convene discussions, share learning, and support capacity focused on those issues of greatest priority for the sector. Together we are building a movement for better aid in Sudan.
